Can I install a TentBox roof tent to the bed of my truck?

Summary

It's possible to install your TentBox onto the bed of your truck, but you must consider the information in this guide if doing so.

  • Check the materials
  • Check the weight limit

If you have a truck, you may want to install your TentBox to the rear cab/bed, instead of on the front cab/roof. This is definitely possible with some trucks (as per the image below), however there are a few things you need to consider to ensure it is safe.

1) Check the materials

Some rear cabs are made of fibreglass or cheap plastic. They aren't designed to hold the weight of a TentBox safely, and you should thoroughly check your manual to determine the material it is built from.

If the bed of your truck has a steel frame, it's more likely to be suitable for installing a TentBox. Again, you can check this information in your vehicle's manual, or contact your vehicle dealership.

In some trucks, it is possible to add metal reinforcement to the read cab / bed, to enable a TentBox installation. You should check with the vehicle manufacturer or a professional mechanic to see if this is possible / necessary.

If in doubt, always speak with a professional mechanic, or vehicle outfitter.

2) Check the weight limit

You need to research the weight limit of the bed/cab you wish to install your TentBox on.

TentBox will not be able to provide this information for you, and we suggest you get in contact with a professional, or the vehicle manufacturer for advice. The weight limit of the rear cab will need to be at least as much as the TentBox you plan to install.

You can find the weight of each TentBox model on our comparison page.
