How to keep warm in your TentBox with the Thermal Kit

Camping in the winter can be an amazing experience. Crisp air, starry skies and quiet campsites. What’s not to love? The challenge is staying warm enough when the temperature cools down – especially at night.

Staying warm in your TentBox plays a big part in ensuring you’re comfortable enough to enjoy every minute of the adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned winter camper or trying it out for the first time, here are some tips to help you stay cosy in your TentBox this autumn and winter.

1. Insulate your TentBox with the Thermal Kit

The first step in staying warm at night is making sure your TentBox is properly insulated. Even though TentBoxes are designed to be weatherproof, adding an extra layer of insulation can make all the difference.

Most TentBox models have the option to add an inner Thermal Kit. These are specifically designed to trap heat inside and block cold air from coming in. They feature built-in windows so you can still enjoy those all-important elevated views.

2. Choose a cosy sleep setup

Having the right sleep setup is a game-changer when it comes to staying warm at night. Alongside your Thermal Kit, it’s a good idea to make your TentBox super cosy with the right bedding and pillows. With a thermal kit keeping the cold out, you’ll enjoy your sleep even more.

  • Sleeping bags: If you’re planning to camp during the winter, look for a sleeping bag that’s rated to at least -11°C – especially if you plan to camp in freezing temperatures.
  • Extra blankets: Adding an additional blanket is often enough to provide some extra warmth without the need for a bulkier sleeping bag. A synthetic down material replicates the warming and heating effects of down, without the bulk.
  • Sheets & pillows: The TentBox mattress is already super comfy, but adding a fitted sheet creates another layer of cosy. Don’t forget to bring your favourite pillows, too.

3. Use a hot water bottle

A simple yet effective trick to keep warm is using hot water bottles. Fill up a few bottles with hot (but not boiling) water and tuck them into your sleeping bag about 20-30 minutes before you go to bed.

Place them at the foot of your bag to keep your toes toasty, or hold one close to your core for maximum heat retention. You can also get reusable hand warmers to help you stay warm during your trip. Slip them into your gloves, pocket or even your sleeping bag.

4. Wrap up warm

The way you dress inside your TentBox can make or break your night’s sleep. Layering is key, and it’s all about managing moisture and warmth:

Base layer: Wearing thermal base layers helps to lock in the warmth from your body. Merino wool or synthetic materials are great choices.

Middle layer: This is your insulating layer, so opt for a cosy fleece or jumper over your thermals.

Socks, gloves and hats: Wool socks and gloves are a must. Keeping your extremities warm will help to maintain your core temperature.

Even with a Thermal Kit in place, layering your clothes ensures you trap even more warmth inside your TentBox. Take a look at TentBox Apparel for clothing and accessories that offer the perfect blend of practicality, comfort and style.

5. Keep the air flowing

It might sound counterintuitive, but it’s important to keep a small vent or window open in your TentBox, even in winter.

When you’re sleeping, your body releases moisture through breathing and sweating. If there’s no airflow, this moisture can condense and make your sleeping space damp, which leads to feeling colder.

Opening a window just a crack for ventilation helps prevent any buildup of condensation and keeps your TentBox dry and warmer overall.
