Nilee’s TentBox Trip to the Isle of Skye

Summary

Some trips are built around a single view. Nilee's was built around several – and a TentBox that let her wake up in the middle of them.

The route north from Edinburgh took in the Three Sisters at Glencoe on the way through, before dropping onto Skye itself. Two nights at Glenbrittle Campsite & Cafe, right at the foot of the Black Cuillin, gave the group their base camp. In Nilee's words:

"We spent two incredible nights experiencing a wonderfully cozy stay in the TentBox Lite right at the foot of the dramatic Black Cuillin mountains at Glenbrittle Campsite & Cafe."

Waking up surrounded by such raw, sweeping wilderness

From Glenbrittle, the group also worked their way up to the Trotternish peninsula, taking in the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing – two of the landscapes that do most of the work in selling people on Skye in the first place. But it was the mornings back at camp that stuck with Nilee most:

"The absolute highlight of the trip was taking in the stunning scenery during our explorations, and something truly special was waking up surrounded by such raw, sweeping wilderness every morning."

The Cuillin hike, the Fairy Pools, and the long way home

The standout adventure was a hike around the Cuillin mountains, and Nilee is in no doubt about how it landed with the group:

"We spent our days taking on epic adventures, including the breathtaking 12 km hike around the Cuillin mountains that we completely adored."

Heading back south towards Edinburgh, the group broke the drive up with two more stops that are hard to skip on Skye: the magical Fairy Pools for a wander, and Eilean Donan Castle for photos before the road home.

Food and drink along the way

No trip report is complete without the food, and Nilee's had real highlights:

"Before heading to the campsite, we stopped at The Sprig for a great lunch recommendation featuring amazing traditional Scottish meals and an incredible French martini, and we also loved grabbing a great toastie and coffee from Lean to Coffee Isle of Skye."

Back at base, Glenbrittle Campsite & Cafe turned out to have its own trick up its sleeve. As Nilee put it:

"To top it off, you can pre-order genuinely good sourdough pizzas (often called Cuillin Pizzas) right at the campsite cafe."

After a day on the Cuillin ridge, that's about as good as camp food gets.

Build your own setup like Nilee's

Want a trip like this one? Nilee's group camped in a TentBox Lite XL, and the current version is available now, built around the same fold-out simplicity and space that made those two nights at Glenbrittle feel properly cosy rather than cramped. Pair it with the accessories that cover what a trip like this actually demands – warmth on cold Highland nights, extra space at camp, and comfort after a long day on the hill – and you've got a similar roof tent setup ready for your own version of Skye.

  • TentBox Lite XL – the tent itself: a super-king mattress, five-minute setup, and enough room for four, so nobody's fighting for space after a 12km hike.

  • Thermal Kit – turns cold Highland nights into the kind of cosy stay Nilee described, whatever the Cuillin weather throws at you.

  • Tunnel Awning – extra covered space at camp, ideal for eating those pre-ordered Cuillin Pizzas without decamping to the car.

  • Fitted Sheets – a small comfort upgrade that makes the tent feel like an actual bed after a long day on the trail.
