Autumn is often overlooked by campers, but it can be one of the most beautiful times of year to be immersed in nature. Plus, it’s always that bit less busy.
So, why not make the most of the Autumnal peace and quiet and “pitch up” amongst the colourful foliage?
Here are 6 spots that will make for great Autumn getaways.
The South Coast
One of the most wonderful aspects of nature in Autumn is the changing colours of the leaves. Greens turn to russet red and warm yellows. Wild Boar Wood Campsite can be found in West Sussex, and is an especially good place to catch the colourful display. There are plenty of deciduous trees in the 600-acre woodland there – perfect for strolling.
The West Country
If you’re looking for a spot with lots of facilities, look no further than Home Farm Holiday Centre in Somerset. Visitors to the site can enjoy half an hour free in an indoor heated pool every day, which is perfect for warming up after a long Autumnal walk in the Quantocks!
Another large holiday park in the west country is Cofton Holidays in Devon. This campsite is open all year round. If you’re bringing the family during the school holidays, there are events, a pool and fun day-time activities to keep everyone entertained.
If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous to do in Devon, Westdown Farm, right in the middle of the rolling countryside is a wild-camping haven. TentBoxer can pop up their rooftop tent, and you can also set up a caravan here, but don’t expect all-mod cons. It’s a prime location, though, for campers who want to layer up and march about in the crisp Devonian air.
Quantock Orchard Caravan Park is another bigger campsite in Somerset. Again, this might be a good holiday destination for families looking to hire bikes and set off from somewhere with more facilities.
The Midlands
Near Ledbury in Herefordshire, Woodside Country Park is a no-nonsense 25-acre site, dotted with woodlands and ponds. There are over 500 native water plants in this country park, which throw up colour and character all year round. So there’s nothing to stop you from enjoying the semi-wild trails during the Autumn months as well as the summer, and if you own a TentBox you’ll be able to find a spot for it here.
Or, you’re more of the glamping type, and like shepherd’s huts, Midland Farm Glamping is open year round and is a great Autumn camping location. Their huts are suitable for two or three people and have en-suites and access to a rustic hot-tub. The landscape around them heads off to the Black Mountains, where you can hike safe in the knowledge of a comfy night’s sleep when you get back!
The Lake District
One of the most beautiful spots in the country, the Lake District is full of fantastic camping zones. Its lakes, mountains, woodlands and rolling hills are all especially eye-catching when splashed in red, orange and yellow foliage.
It’s also one of the best places to spy rare fauna such as red squirrels, red deer and peregrine falcons. Many of our TentBox customers visit the Lake District for its hidden campsites, as there are plenty of off-the-beaten-track areas where you can settle for the night.
Norfolk
Norfolk is a beautiful place to pop up your TentBox and enjoy the end of Autumn. Tunstall Forest is a beautiful place to explore, and there are also plenty of beaches on that strip of coastline. Try Highsand Creek Campsite or Deepdale Camping for some beach-side posts.
Or, you can try Fire Pit Camp – a small site of 15 tent pitches, plus the Wren’s Nest. What’s a Wren’s Nest you ask? It’s a snug ‘hazel bender-tent’ that sleeps eight. The Fire Pit is a hipsters paradise, with yoga classes, a former double-decker bus, and coffee and cocktails galore for a more glamorous experience.
Perthshire
Perth is known as the gateway to the Highlands and is a tiny but ancient city. It can be a great place to visit in Autumn and the camping in Perthshire is remote and beautiful in the reds of the season.
The Birks of Aberfeldy woodland and Craigvinean Forest are two such places where the trees burst into flaming colours. And, if you’re looking for the sublime, the Pitlochry Enchanted Forest runs an after-dark sound and light show. This spectacle illuminates the forest with magic and is well worth a visit.
